My name is Loo Yu Jun, and I am a Ph.D. candidate in Mathematics at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. My advisor is Silas Alben. If you like fluids and continuum mechanics (or snakes), check out his website! I spend my time here in Michigan using math to both understand and control things moving in fluids (In practice this means I spend a lot of time messing around on my computer). You can see some of my research here. Other than that, I also do a lot of hiking, birdwatching, and wrestling.

I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for my undergraduate degree in Pure Mathematics and specialized rather deeply in Several Complex Variables and Partial Differential Equations. I spent my days kicking snow around, drawing silly math pictures, and working with Alexander Tumanov, researching some open problems in Complex Analysis. In 2022, I won the H. Roy Brahana Prize, awarded to the student with the most exceptional undergraduate mathematics career. I think of my time there very fondly.

Before that, I was a Search and Rescue Dog Handler for the Singapore Civil Defense Force. Here are some pictures from when I brought my dogs (Spot (left) and Max (right)) to meet the public.

I met some of my closest friends there, although most of them have left the service to do their own thing in the pet industry. If you happen to have lived in Singapore and also happen to have a dog, here’s a shout-out to my friends!

In a past life, I tried my hand at painting. These certainly aren’t all of them, or even my best ones, but they are the ones that ended up here. I still paint and draw, but it has been a long time since I’ve made anything I felt would be a worthwhile addition to this website. It will probably be an even longer time until I do.
